Bright Minds: Bold ideas. Smart materials.

Which ideas and visions do researchers bring to life - and how do they do it? At Empa - the place where innovation starts - more than 1,000 scientists, engineers and technicians contribute with their expertise every day to develop new paths to a sustainable, livable future. Meet the bright minds at Empa's laboratories in this video and livestream series and learn about their solutions that are crucial to tackling the many challenges of our times.

Prof. Dr. Mirko Kovac

Head of Laboratory of Sustainability Robotics

After studying mechanical engineering at ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Kovac received his doctorate from the Laboratory for Intelligent Systems at EPFL in Lausanne.

He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard Microrobotics Laboratory at Harvard University in Cambridge, USA.

Kovac is also Director of the Aerial Robotics Laboratory at Imperial College London and Royal Society Wolfson Fellow.

Beyond classic robotics

Prof. Dr. Kovac and his team at the Sustainability Robotics Lab are working on robots and drones able to react

  • intelligently,
  • autonomously and
  • robustly to their environment.

A novel family of interactive and multi modal flying robots will have new types of capabilities that have transformative applications and promise to make a meaningful contribution to society.

The highlight

Effortlessly changing terrain - that's what the novel robots can do. So, for example, change from flying in the air to diving into water - or to other surfaces. Such transitions are complex and require a completely new class of construction.
